Pioneer Fire Daily Update
August 6, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 36763 (No updated IR)
Start Date: June 8, 2024
Location: 31 miles NW of Chelan, WA
Containment: 12%
Personnel: 756
Cause: Human-caused, under investigation
CURRENT SITUATION: Twenty-five to 30 MPH down lake winds expected around 3 p.m.“These are the sort of days fire makes big moves in Washington,” -- CAIMT 15 Fire Behavior Analyst, Dan O’Connor.
YESTERDAY’S ACTIVITIES: A dry cold front moved in over the region increasing fire weather. Fire managers expected adynamic fire day with potential noteworthy wind gusts over the area around 4 p.m. Those winds manifested and boots onthe ground saw significant fire activity well into the evening. Crews continued prepping line on the Stehekin Ranch ValleyRoad up to High Bridge Camp. Overnight the fire moved into the community of Stehekin through the Purple and ImusCreek drainage. Crews were able to hold the fire to within 100 feet of several structures at the preestablished control lines.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: The fire remains mostly within older burn scars. The most significant activity is in the area of PurpleCreek and above the community of Stehekin on the upper slopes toward the north end of the fire. Activity in the PrinceCreek area is mostly confined to extremely steep headwater slopes with residual hotspots. Of concern for fire managers isthe possibility of rollout developing to active flanking and backing in the Purple and Imus Creek drainage. Fish and PrinceCreek contain pockets of scattered heat as residual fuels consume. Expected northerly winds around 3 p.m. will presentsignificant challenges for the day’s firefighting operations and increase the potential for rollout, single and group treetorching and uphill runs. The Flat Creek Fire is located 20 miles northwest of Stehekin and is roughly 10 acres. The fire is in extremely steep terraininaccessible to firefighters and is being patrolled by aircraft. Firefighters are developing strategies for future operations. Acamera will be placed at a strategic location so incident management personnel can evaluate fire conditions on a 24-hourbasis. Resources remain fully committed to operations within the Stehekin community.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Today’s winds will be persistent throughout the day at 5 to 10 mph. During the early morninghours winds will decrease but come back down lake at a sustained 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph in channeledareas in the afternoon. The potential for scattered thunderstorms remain over the area.
EVACUATIONS: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuation levels remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire. Please contact Chelan CountyEmergency Management or visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information.
FOREST CLOSURE: Closures for the North Cascades National Park: https://www.nps.gov/noca/index.htm . The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has a closure order in place for much of the fire area: Okanogan-WenatcheeNational Forest - Alerts & Closures (usda.gov). Campfires are prohibited. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) inplace over the fire: https://tfr.faa.gov/save_pages/detail_4_6779.html . Unauthorized drone activity is prohibited under theTFR.

Stehekin Update 8/4
Pictures are from 9:00am this morning.
1. Fire is still slow moving, thankfully. There is prediction of uplake winds for the next two days which can change the course of the fire and potentially start pushing it up the valley again.
2. It is above War Creek, but has not made it to Lake Juanita yet. It is close to the lake near Hazard Creek.
3. The plan is to hopefully get scoopers on it today again. We are now up to level 1-2, meaning, we are at the top of the list now for getting resources. That was pretty evident with how many planes we were given yesterday!
4. There is of course potential for it creeping down more toward the Stehekin Landing. Structure Crews are ready and prepared for that, and a prepared to do burning if it comes to it.
5. There is a new fire between Cottonwood and Bridge Creek. It is estimated about 5-10 acres and in a wet area. They are monitoring that fire as well now. It is called the Flat Fire.
6. We will no longer be having weekly public meetings in Stehekin, that will continue to be in Manson only.
7. Still safe, still thankful. “Faith shows the reality of what we hope for; it is the evidence of the things we cannot see.” Hebrews 11:1-2 NLT
I am still positively overwhelmed by how people have come together in support, encouragement, prayers and positivity. THANK YOU.
We have the reality of what we are or may be facing with this fire, no one is naive to that, including myself. Negativity, pessimism, and discouragement is not what will bring strength to any of us right now.
I am not asking anyone to forget decisions made from June, or to stop what we are fighting for on that. But, it cannot be our continual focus. Let’s focus on what we are facing today and let’s keep fighting for what still can be done right now, in the right ways.

I was aprehensive about seeing it today. It wasn't as bad as I had imagined it. Still, there were flames and it was indeed above the landing as well as at Hazard Creek.pasayten wrote: Sat Aug 03, 2024 9:20 am

Pioneer Fire Daily Update
August 3, 2024
Quick Facts
Size: 33,761 (No updated IR)
Start Date: June 8, 2024
Location: 31 miles NW of Chelan, WA
Containment: 12%
Personnel: 668
Cause: Human-caused, under investigation
Resources Assigned: 13 crews, 4 helicopters, 24 engines, 28 water tenders, 20 heavy equipment
Bear season opened August 1st. Hunters should keep themselves up to date with local forest closures by visiting the Forest Service Forest Closure Interactive Map.
CURRENT SITUATION: California Incident Management Team 15, led by Incident Commander Tom Clemo assumed command of operations on the Pioneer Fire at 6:00 am this morning. Yesterday in Stehekin, the fire crossed into Purple Creek and is burning in the elevations above the boat landing. Sprinklers were activated and 27 miles of hose line through town is in operation wetting around homes and infrastructure. Crews are working to slow the progression of the fire with aviation support, but the hot and dry weather remains a troubling factor.
Crews also assisted in initial attack on the Flat Fire that ignited midday to the west of Stehekin. That fire is in steep and inaccessible terrain to boots-on-the-ground firefighters and was supported by helicopter bucket drops and scooper planes. Mop-up continued along the lakeshore from Fourmile down lake. Firefighters will hand check for hot spots on the ground around structures and extinguishing any heat that may be found. The mastication of biomass and line strengthening work to the south of the fire continues to be slow and steady work.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: The fire to the west of Stehekin will be supported by helicopter bucket drops today. Firefighters will actively engage the fire above Stehekin by implementing tactical firing operations to reduce flammable fuels. The fire is following previous fire patterns seen in the area, running up drainages and stalling progression in the high country. Washington State Fire Mobilization and firefighter crews continue structure protection on the lakeshore. Masticators and bulldozers will work to widen the contingency lines along Nelson Ridge and improve road conditions on the south side of the fire.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: An excessive heat advisory has been issued for Saturday and the Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for increasingly hot, dry, and unstable weather conditions through Sunday. However, winds are not expected to be notable throughout the weekend. Smoke impacts from the Pioneer Fire will be most noticeable around Lake Chelan throughout the day, with some relief expected in the afternoon. See Current Smoke Outlook for North Central Washington (airfire.org) for information about smoke and air quality.
EVACUATIONS: Level 1, 2 and 3 evacuation levels remain in effect around the Pioneer Fire. Please contact Chelan County Emergency Management or visit https://t.ly/QoH9w for more information.

Re: Pioneer Fire Info - Lake Chelan
The hot weather increased fire activity on the north side of the Pioneer Fire this afternoon. For the last several days, firefighters have been using scooper planes and helicopters to drop water to try to cool the fire's edge. With the increased temperatures, low humidity, unstable atmosphere and steep terrain, the fire has picked up in activity despite these measures. The fire has crossed into the upper part of Hazard and Purple Creek.
Community protection measures have been underway in Stehekin with over 26 miles of fire hoselays and sprinklers placed throughout the community. Sprinklers have been activated around the landing area. Crews have not implemented any firing operations in the area so far. They remain poised to implement defensive firing operations if needed.

Pioneer Fire Daily Update August 2, 2024
Northwest Team 3 is preparing to transition management of the Pioneer and Easy Fires to California Team 15 on Saturday at 6 AM. The incoming team was briefed yesterday on the current situation and operational objectives and today will “shadow” Team 3 to ensure a smooth transition.
CURRENT SITUATION: The fire was active on the southern edge of Hazard Creek, where a log holding heat rolled into a small side drainage and ignited unburned fuels in an area of about 10 acres. Helicopters water drops and scooper planes were used to hold the fire in place. Hot, dry conditions provoked smoldering areas in the Upper Fish Creek and Fourmile drainages to become active and send up a column of smoke. Increase in fire activity is expected on the north flank of the fire with the hot and dry weather anticipated for the next few days
In Stehekin, crews continue to test hoselays and sprinklers along the community protection line and around homes. Structure preparation and community protection lines are being expanded up valley. On the south flank of the fire, heavy equipment continued to work on the shaded fuelbreak on Cooper Ridge. Crews chipped trees removed from the shaded fuel break and hauled it offsite. Road work in Gold Creek and Black Canyon continues to mitigate impacts from heavy equipment use and to ensure ingress and egress for firefighters.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Crews will continue to mop-up and patrol along the lakeshore from Fourmile Creek down lake and conduct strategic burning operations if needed north of Fourmile Creek to protect structures along the lakeshore. Aviation resources will continue to support firefighters through crew transport and water drops to slow the fire’s progression north. In Stehekin, firefighters will continue with structure protection measures including extending community protection line up valley past the Rainbow Falls area. An additional Interagency Hot Shot crew arrived yesterday to assist with suppression activities in Stehekin and burn operations.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Temperatures reached 101 degrees in Stehekin yesterday. The Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for increasingly hot, dry, and unstable weather conditions Friday through Sunday. There is a 20% chance of thunderstorms later this afternoon or in the early evening. An Excessive Heat Watch has also been issued for Friday and Saturday.
FOREST CLOSURE: Closures for the North Cascades National Park: https://www.nps.gov/noca/index.htm
The Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest has a closure order in place for much of the fire area: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest - Alerts & Closures (usda.gov). Campfires are prohibited. Northwest Team 3 is preparing to transition management of the Pioneer and Easy Fires to California Team 15. The incoming team will be briefed on the current situation and operational objectives today and will take command of the fire on Saturday.
CURRENT SITUATION: Firefighters have successfully protected the docks, houses, and other infrastructure, along the lakeshore, from Safety Harbor north to the mouth of Fourmile Creek. Much of the fire’s edge along the lakeshore is now contained. Mop up and patrol around structures between Flick Creek and Fourmile Creek continued yesterday. A crew was successfully inserted at northwestern edge of the fire, between Fourmile Creek and Hazard Creek, and is working to suppress hot spots, coordinating with aviation resources conducting water drops. Structure and community protection work continues around Stehekin, with firefighters working to improve the community protection lines, create defensible space around structures, remove hazard trees, and install pumps and sprinklers. Tweny-six miles of hose have been installed throughout the Stehekin area.
Firefighters again detected no heat or fire activity in Lone Fir drainage yesterday. South of the fire, crews have prepared contingency lines along Nelson and Coyote ridge to be used should the fire progress further south toward Manson. These contingency lines tie into Cooper Ridge Road, where crews have been reducing fuels through mastication and removal of vegetation to create a fuel break. Road work to maintain ingress and egress for fire equipment is ongoing. The incident management team hosted a community meeting in Manson last night. A recording of the meeting can be viewed on the Pioneer Fire Information Facebook page.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: Firefighters inserted into the Fourmile Creek and Hazard Creek area yesterday will continue to suppress hot spots and coordinate with aviation resources conducting water drops, their combined efforts are aimed at creating a checking action to slow fire progression northward. Mop up and patrol along the lakeshore will continue. In Stehekin, firefighters will continue actions to protect the community, including defensible space work and installation of pumps, hoses, and sprinklers. Crews will also continue preparing and improving indirect contingency lines south of the fire.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Today and into the weekend will bring increasingly hotter and drier weather conditions, with a slight chance of thunderstorms on Friday. It will remain unseasonably warm with periods of breezy down lake winds. An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Friday and Saturday. See Current Smoke Outlook for North Central Washington (airfire.org) for information about smoke and air quality.

Pioneer Fire Daily Update July 31, 2024
There will be a community meeting in Manson Wednesday, 5:30 PM at the Manson High School. The meeting will be streamed live on the Pioneer Fire Information Facebook page. Please submit questions in advance to 2024.pioneer@firenet.gov or via Facebook Messenger.
CURRENT SITUATION: Weather conditions remained favorable yesterday with minimal fire progression to the north. Water drops from helicopters and scooper aircraft were used throughout the day between Hazard Creek and Fourmile Creek, removing much of the heat from the fire and slowing fire growth along the lakeshore. Firefighters are using this time of slowed fire activity to continue their work on community protection measures in Stehekin before hot and dry conditions return. Crews continued to work their way up the Stehekin Valley towards Harlequin Bridge, installing sprinklers and hose lays. Felling of hazard trees and work on the community protection lines also continued throughout the Stehekin area. Along the lakeshore, firefighters continued to mop up and patrol around structures between Flick Creek and Fourmile Creek. The southern edge of the fire is still holding in Lone Fir drainage and continues to be monitored for any heat or activity. Crews continued to improve the contingency line along Nelson Ridge, as well as mastication around Oss Peak and work on the shaded fuel break from Cooper Ridge down to the Antilon Lake area. Road improvements in the Black Canyon and Gold Creek areas also continued to maintain ingress and egress for fire equipment.
TODAY’S ACTIVITIES: To further slow northward progression of the fire, firefighters will be inserted into the lower slope between Fourmile Creek and Hazard Creek to suppress hot spots and coordinate with aviation resources conducting water drops. Crews will continue mopping up and patrolling around structures along the lakeshore. In Stehekin, structure protection work will continue up the valley. Firefighters will continue to improve the community protection line, installing hose lays and sprinklers where needed, while also assessing where existing roads can be used as fireline. South of the fire, and west of Manson, crews will continue preparing indirect contingency lines.
WEATHER AND SMOKE: Today and into the weekend will see increasingly hotter and drier weather conditions, with a chance of thunderstorms starting Thursday. An Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for Friday and Saturday. Overnight temperatures will also be hotter and drier. Friday will also bring a period of up lake winds. See Current Smoke Outlook for North Central Washington (airfire.org) for information about smoke and air quality.

Well, I have been on the boat, Sunday, Monday and today and each day it looks better and better. I haven't been able to open the infrared maps yet-I'll try again today.
it will be interesting to see what this fire does in the next few days especially with the warmer weather.
