Re: Highway 20 status due to wildfire! (CLOSED again)

Post by pasayten »

IT'S BACK! SR 20 North Cascades Highway reopened at noon today (Aug. 22) between Granite Creek and Easy Pass trailhead (milepost 148-157) after having been closed since Aug. 4 for fire activity and then a mudslide.
Before you start your engines, a few things to know:
-Fire crews continue to work in the area in response to the Easy Fire and a 35 mph advisory speed zone has been posted between milepost 150 and 154.
-Please do not pull over or attempt to pass through this area and remain alert for fire and maintenance vehicles exiting and entering the roadway.
-Beginning 7 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, there will be flagger-controlled traffic with a pilot car between milepost 150 and 154 so maintenance crews can continue to clear basins and restore drainage. The road will remain open without a pilot car during non-working hours.
Thank you to our crews for all of their work to clear ~7,000 tons of material after a mudslide buried sections of the road on Aug. 11 following a rainstorm. We are grateful for all of your hard work!

WSDOT

SR 20 NORTH CASCADES HIGHWAY IS OFFICIALLY OPEN AGAIN!
As of 1 p.m. Friday, July 26, State Route 20 North Cascades Highway has reopened near Granite Creek (mileposts 148-157), following a multiday closure due to fire activity from the Easy Fire.
Fire crews have been removing trees and brush adjacent to the highway and will continue fire migration work in the area.
That means flagger-controlled traffic and pilot cars from 7 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily. Expect delays of 30 minutes to allow fire crews to safely remove trees and brush from the roadway.
Please do not pull of the highway between mileposts 148 and 157 and remain alert for fire response and maintenance crews throughout the mountain passes. There are no detours on Forest Service roads. Never pass flaggers or pilot cars.
We know many of you are eager for the roadway to reopen, but please be courteous and look out for each other. The last thing anyone wants is a crash that closes the highway again because someone was traveling carelessly, too fast or unaware of their surroundings.
PLEASE NOTE: In order to ensure you aren't getting outdated information, this the final NEW post we will make about SR 20 North Cascades Highway open/close status due to Easy Fire. Any additional updates will be added to THIS post, accompanied by a date and timestamp. We will pin this post to the top of our Facebook page for easy reference.

On the Easy Fire, State Route 20 continues to be closed due to public safety hazards and active fire growth. The fire is in extremely steep terrain with rocks and trees falling down to the highway corridor. With wind picking up yesterday, fire activity increased, including some individual trees starting to torch in areas.

Firefighters are working with Washington Department of Transportation to remove fallen trees and debris from the highway area. They are regularly evaluating road conditions and fire behavior to assess the continued need for the closure.
A map of current highway conditions is available at https://wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/
