You need to let the water sit longer if it is cold (which it likely will be) than if it is room temperature.

Neither boiling nor chemical treatments will be relevant if the water in question is polluted with toxic chemicals. There are few products available to civilians which can treat water contaminated with toxic chemicals.

So the town of Winthrop has issued a Boil Water advisory because the system went down,great timing Winthrop appreciate the advisory about possibly having contaminated water and that water should be boiled prior to consuming or using, might of also mentioned an alternate method of purifying.
I.e. 8 drops of chlorine/ chlorox per gallon of water with a 30 minute wait before using, this is for clear water if cloudy double the amount and contact time. Can leave the lid off the container using to treat the water so odor dissipates.
Fill you containers in the morning for afternoon evening use and fill at night prior to going to bed for morning use.
