Happy 2026 fellow North Cascades enthusiasts!
In the last update, we shared that emergency work had started to repair the Little Boulder Creek channel and to clear mud and debris slides on State Route 20 between milepost 171 and 184. During that time, the road between Silver Star gate (milepost 171) and Early Winters gate (milepost 178) that is typically available for recreation was also closed because our contractor was working seven days a week to clear the area.

We are happy to share that the clearing and repairs are complete on the section between Silver Star and Early Winters and confirm that the area is again available for recreation. The same backcountry recommendations apply: Be prepared and be responsible. Make sure someone knows where you're headed and when you plan to return. Check in on current conditions with the Northwest Avalanche Center and keep in mind there is no cell service in the mountains.

Incredible work to finish out 2025 and kick off 2026
We are grateful to our emergency contractor, Selland Construction and the crews that showed up on incredibly short notice and worked through the holidays to get these repairs done. There's still work on the section of SR 20 between Early Winters and Goat Creek Road, so if you're headed to Early Winters please take it slow and travel for conditions on the local detour. We've been sharing pictures of this historic flooding and repair effort from around the state on our Flickr album.

While repairs continue on routes throughout the state, be sure to check the real time travel map before you head out for your winter adventures. Take care and safe travels.
